This week I will be sharing the work-in-progress that I have been doing with the Philosophy department at University of Twente, exploring the ethical and political dimensions of technology in the pandemic.

One of the first projects that I did during my NGO work in India was working with migrant workers in Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh with Aajeevika Bureau and Grameen Development Services. As we know the pandemic became a humanitarian crisis for the migrant workers even before the virus reached them.

In this project, I attempt to bring together the perspectives towards a conceptualisation of ethics and politics of technology that can be sensitive towards the inequalities of the urban poor, especially the migrant workers.

The workshop shall also have another colleague presenting their perspective with examples from the African continent.

About the Workshop

In the context of the BMS-funded project FRAME-PRO+, we host a workshop to evaluate the role of geo-technologies in COVID-19 response.

The starting point is that COVID-19 is not only the first pandemic which has been covered in various media in almost real-time, but maps and spatial topics (like distance and mobility) play a central role in the reporting. Since we take the insights from FRAME-PRO (Isaac) and FRAME-PRO+ (Ajay) as a starting point, we will focus on cases from the so-called “Global South” (especially, India and Africa).

The workshop will present our ongoing work exploring the ethical and political dimensions of geo-data i.e. the science of where in the context of the global south. Ajay will present the explorations from the Indian perspective and Isaac from the African perspective to hold discussions and gather feedback.
